There have been many, many studies done on the effects of a musical education. The early years are very significant in the life of a child. Adding music during those years, has been proven to affect the growing brain in unique ways.
That is why many schools, public and private, insist that every student learn an instrument, or sing in the choir. You don't have to become a pro, or even a successful amateur player, to benefit from learning to play an instrument, or learn to sing.
And believe it or not, just listening to Bach can improve brain function. And, stunningly enough, even your house plants grow better when listening to Bach (true!).
Some of the benefits of musical input include, increased abilities in math, science, and logic. There are also huge social interplay understandings that are realized, as well as major improvements in IQ.
Translation? Every child NEEDS a musical education to fully develop their brain. You'll think better, be a better friend, and be smarter, too. You can't lose!

In researching the above question, I found it hard to come up with persons of influence who did NOT play the piano, or some other instrument. I did find one famous 20th century composer who did NOT play, but had a partner who did. They'd sit at the piano together while he sang the tune, and the pianist came up with the chords. Pretty cool.
You will NEVER believe who that was: Irving Berlin, and the pianist was his secretary. Wowzaa.
I found piano-ist Presidents, Scientists, Artists, CEO's, military commanders, you name it... Seems like you can't miss if you study music!
